President of Ireland, Mr. Michael D. Higgins, poet and writer, academic and statestman, human rights advocate, promoter of inclusive citizenship, visited the University of São Paulo on 8 October, 2012, delivering the lectureThe Legacy and Challenge of Irish Studies in New Conditions
President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, visited the University of São Paulo on 8 October, 2012, delivering the lecture 'The Legacy and Challenge of Irish Studies in New Conditions', in which he highlighted the importance of the cultural bonds between Ireland and Brazil that have been built by USP for more than thirty years. He also spoke about the socioeconomic scenario in Europe and the emigration of Irish youth. Before the lecture he was welcomed by the rector, João Grandino Rodas, and signed the renewal of the agreements with the W.B.Yeats Chair of Irish Studies. Professors Josephine Page, Head of the International Education Division of University of Limerick, and Jane Ohlmeyer, Vice-Provost for Global Relations of Trinity College Dublin, also signed agreements with USP.
The lecture was held in the University Council room. Among the presents were the president's wife, Sabina Higgins; the State Secretary for Trade and Development, Joe Costello; the Irish Ambassador in Brazil, Frank Sheridan; the pro-rector for academic research at USP, Marco Antonio Zago; FFLCH dean, Sérgio Adorno and the professors Laura P. Z. Izarra and Munira H. Mutran. The latter presented the president's biography and trajectory for the audience.
