The Federal University of Paraná, the Brazilian Association of Irish Studies (ABEI) and the W. B. Yeats Chair of Irish Studies of the University of São Paulo organised a Symposium of Irish Studies which, since 2006, has brought together specialists from various associations such as IASIL, SILAS, ACIS, CAIS, EFACIS, AEDEI, BAIS.
The Fifth Symposium of Irish Studies in South America has the support of the Embassy of Ireland in Brazil.
The theme, "Ireland on the Screen, Stage and Page" will include the following topics:
• Film
• Radio and TV
• Photography
• Theatre and Drama
• Fiction and Poetry
• Translation of Irish authors
• Literary criticism
• History, Politics and Economy
• Philosophy
Keynote speakers:
• Lance Pettitt (Metropolitan University, Leeds)
• Angus Mitchell (Historian and editor of The Amazon Journal of Roger Casement)
• Maureen Murphy (Hofstra University, New York)
• Luz Mar González Arias (University of Oviedo, Spain)
• Hernán Neira (University of Santiago de Chile)
• Jorge Fondebrider (Translator, Argentina)
• Irish poet Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin (Trinity College Dublin)
• Irish poet and editor Macdara Woods
• Irish film-maker John T. Davies
Individual Papers of 20 minutes and panels of three or four participants were presented on the topics above.
