The University of São Paulo/W. B. Yeats Chair of Irish Studies and the Brazilian Association of Irish Studies (ABEI), with the support of the Irish Embassy in Brazil, organised the Sixth Edition of the Symposium of Irish Studies in South America, which, since 2006, has brought together specialists from various associations such as ABEI, ACIS, AEDEI, BAIS, CAIS, EFACIS, IASIL, SILAS.
The event - "Striving for Reality in Contemporary Ireland" - will approach questions of literary and artistic representation as well as historical interpretations of contemporary reality in Ireland, also pertinent to the Irish community in the international context.
How do contemporary writers, artists and cultural critics relate to the issues of late twentieth- and twenty-first century society, in all its complexities and limitations, from the Troubles, Peace Process and Celtic Tiger period to the current post-scandal, new economic crisis period, in their strive to represent contemporary change and reality?
Individual Papers of 20 minutes and panels of three or four participants were presented on the general theme of the symposium and on the topics below:
• Contemporary literary and artistic forms
• Contemporary cultures
• Contemporary history, politics and economics
• Globalization
• Violence
• Family configurations
• Religion
• Race and multiculturalism
• Gender and social class
• New sectarianisms
• Utopias
The keynote speakers that have participated in the Symposium are:

• Prof. Mary Daly (University College Dublin)
• Asier Altuna (ADEI & University of Deusto, Spain)
• Stephanie Scherter (AFIS & Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris)
