Venue: Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte - Natal - RN
The Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, the W. B. Yeats Chair of Irish Studies/University of São Paulo and the Brazilian Association of Irish Studies (ABEI), with the support of the Irish Embassy in Brazil, organised the Seventh Symposium of Irish Studies in South America, which, since 2006, has brought together specialists from various associations such as ABEI, ACIS, AEDEI, BAIS, CAIS, EFACIS, IASIL and SILAS.
The event - "Representations of Women in Contemporary Irish Culture" - will approach questions of contemporary literary and artistic representations of women, as well as historical interpretations of their role in Ireland and in the Irish international diasporic community.
How do writers, artists and cultural critics relate to the issues of women's roles and representations in contemporary Ireland, in their complexities and in their struggle to challenge reality and propose change?
Individual papers of 20 minutes, organised in forums of debate, were presented on the general theme of the symposium and on the topics below:
• Women Writers and Artists
• Feminist Criticism and Debate
• Family Configurations
• Rituals and Religion
• Race and Multiculturalism
