III Call for papers - XVII ABEI, III AEIS, II CEI-USAL Symposium of Irish Studies - Buenos Aires

27/8/2022

“Commemoration or Celebration? The Irish Revival One Century Later”

Date: 29, 30 September 2022

Venue: USAL Universidad del Salvador, Buenos Aires, Argentina

The year of 2022 is an important one for Irish Studies in South America, as it commemorates
the centenary of the Irish Free State, established in December 1922, after the three years, which lasted
the Irish War of Independence. At the same time, the year of 2022 is one of changes as the world
emerges from a lockdown facing the COVID-19 pandemic as a common threat. Similar to wars, in A
Cruel Pedagogia Do Vírus /The Cruel Pedagogy of the Virus
(2020), Boaventura Sousa Santos
explains that “the pandemic is an allegory. The literal meaning of the coronavirus pandemic is the
widespread chaotic fear and the death without borders caused by an invisible enemy”. This collective
contemporary trauma has also brought to light issues such as social inequality, gender relations, as well
as issues concerning race and access to education and basic needs of the world population. However,
in terms of the arts, 2022 is the year of the centenary of artistic and literary movements such as that
of the Irish Revival as well as of European and Latin American modernisms. Thus, the ABEI
XVII/AEIS III Symposium of Irish Studies in South America is an invitation to contemplate the ways
in which conflict and crises, such as wars and pandemics have shaped nations. At the same time, it is
an opportunity to rethink the emergence of literature and other expressions of arts, which bring to the
contemporary world a message of hope working through these traumas.

The 2022 Academic Committee encourages delegates to present papers and/or posters about the
following topics:

- Construction of a nation through its narratives;
- Historical links between the Americas and Ireland;
- The Literature of revolutions and independence;
- Travel narratives, diaries, letters, photographs and other means/ways of narrating
the nation/s;
- Political and cultural relations between Ireland and nineteenth-century Latin American countries;
- Irish and Latin American historical fiction;
- Folklore and ethno-music;
- Mass media in the contemporary world;
- Representation in theatre and other arts;
- Translation: cultural and literary translations;
- Irish migration studies;
- Gender, Race and ethnicity;
- Memory studies.
